There are still a few more steps before Facebook IPO and shares are ready to trade. The company is waiting for the Securities and Exchange Commission to declare its Facebook IPO effective — the formal green light Facebook and its underwriters need before they can sell shares to outside buyers.

After four months of paperwork, hype and speculation, the last piece of the Facebook IPO is in place: Facebook said it has priced its Facebook IPO at $38 a share.

At that price, Facebook IPO will raise $16 billion, making it the largest tech IPO in history. It’s the third largest U.S. IPO ever, trailing only the $19.7 billion raised by Visa (V, Fortune 500) in March 2008 and the $18.1 billion raised by automaker General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) in November 2010, according to rankings by Thomson Reuters.

The $38 Facebook IPO price is the rate at which Facebook’s underwriters (including lead banker Morgan Stanley) will sell shares to their clients, which typically include large institutional investors, mutual funds and hedge funds.

Facebook IPO Shares will be released Thursday night to those buyers, who can resell them on the open market beginning on Friday.

Some shares were made available to individual investors, but getting them typically requires either a lot of money or a lot of trading experience. It also required moving fast. Many brokerages offering pieces of Facebook IPO allotment “closed their books” on Tuesday, meaning they stopped taking orders.

Unlike Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), whose IPO used a “Dutch auction” to allow direct bidding by investors, Facebook’s setup doesn’t give regular folks access until shares begin trading publicly on the tech-heavy Nasdaq exchange.

While the market opens at 9:30 am ET on Friday, Facebook IPO shares won’t start trading instantly. It typically takes time — sometimes an hour or more — for newly listed shares to begin actively trading on the day of their public debut. How much Facebook is worth: Facebook’s (FB) market capitalization will hover around $81 billion on the day of its Facebook IPO.

Many Facebook employees and executives hold unexercised stock options. If all of those shares were exercised, Facebook’s outstanding share count would rise to around 2.8 billion — pushing the company’s total valuation closer to $107 billion.

Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg plans to sell 30.2 million shares in the IPO offering. That will net Zuckerberg about $1.1 billion. But Zuckerberg won’t be hanging on to his cash. Facebook said he will use the “substantial majority” of the windfall to cover the massive tax bill he’ll be hit with, thanks to his plan to exercise a large stock-options grant that will increase his ownership stake in the company he founded.

After the offering, Zuckerberg will hold 503.6 million shares, or about 31% of the company. That stake is worth $19.1 billion.

Venture capital firm Accel Partners, which is the largest shareholder outside of Zuckerberg, is selling 49 million shares in the offering. That’s about a quarter of its Facebook holdings. Transformer Studio Source CNN

“For the first time we get to see what may be actual records kept by a scribe, whose job was to be official record keeper of a Maya community,” says archaeologist William Saturno of Boston University. “It’s like an episode of TV’s ‘Big Bang Theory,’ a geek math problem and they’re painting it on the wall. They seem to be using it like a blackboard.” And, despite popular belief, there’s no sign that the Mayan’s believed the world would end in 2012.

“It’s like the odometer of a car, with the Mayan calendar 2012 rolling over from the 120,000s to 130,000,” says Anthony Aveni, professor of astronomy and anthropology at Colgate University. “The car gets a step closer to the junkyard as the numbers turn over; the Maya just start over.”

The numbers appear on the west wall of the building, and appear to include dates some 7,000 years on the future. One appears to record the date they were painted – 813 AD, just as the Mayan world started to collapse.

“The ancient Maya Calendar 2012 predicted the world would continue, that 7,000 years from now, things would be exactly like this,” says Saturno. “We keep looking for endings. The Maya were looking for a guarantee that nothing would change. It’s an entirely different mindset.”

7 inch iPad is the Gadget

The reliable source news said, the 7 inch iPad is the gadget. Maybe it little small, but its a cheap and same quality with the real one.

The outlet says such 7 inch iPad is very much in the works and will come in around the $200 to $250 price range. On the lower end, that’s less than half the price of Apple’s current entry-level iPad model, and 7 inch iPad ranget $150 to $200 less than the 16GB second-generation model that Apple still sells. That would also overlap with the pricing of Apple’s iPod Touch line, which starts out at $199 and tops out at $399 for the 64GB model.

7 inch iPad Features

iMore’s report adds two other interesting assertions. The first is that the 7 inch iPad will only have 8GB of memory. That’s half the memory of the entry-level iPad, which has kept the same three storage configurations (16GB, 32GB, 64GB) since the first-generation model. Second, is that the screen of 7 inch iPad will sport the same resolution as Apple’s latest iPad at 2,048 by 1,536 pixels.

That second detail is of particular interest given the notion that Apple would want to keep in step with what it calls “Retina Displays” on its iOS devices. These are displays where the pixels are so closely packed together that you cannot pick them out from one another when viewing the screen.

As iMore notes, a 2,048 by 1,536 pixel screen at 7 inch iPad would give the smaller iPad a 326 pixels per inch display, up considerably from the 264 pixels per inch on Apple’s latest iPad, and on par with the 326 ppi Apple currently offers on its iPod Touchs and iPhones — just bigger.

That screen resolution combined on 7 inch iPad with smaller storage could cause a problem though. 8GB on an iPad would fill up mighty fast with HD content, and media-rich games. For instance, many 1,080p movies on iTunes go beyond 4GB a pop. There are also games, some of which have stretched in size in the jump to the new iPad. There could be workarounds for it though, particularly if Apple makes some adjustments to its iCloud infrastructure to add streaming instead of downloading.

This is the latest rumor to suggest Apple would roll out a smaller version of the 7 inch iPad later this year. A report from the often off Taipei-based DigiTimes in February said a 7.85-inch iPad model was in the works and ready to ship by the “third quarter” of this year. Separately, Chinese portal Netease asserted the same claim just last month. The big difference from both those reports is the price, which was $50 to $100 higher than iMore’s suggestion.

A chemical found in curry is to be tested for its ability to kill and fight bowel cancer or tumours in patients. Studies have already shown that it can beat bowel cancer cells grown in a laboratory and benefits have been suggested in stroke and dementia patients as well. Now a trial at hospitals in Leicester will investigating giving curcumin alongside chemotherapy drugs.

Fight Bowel Cancer

About 40,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK each year. If the disease spreads around the body, patients are normally given a combination of three chemotherapy drugs, but about half will not respond. Forty patients at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital will take part in the trial, which will compare the effects of giving curcumin pills seven days before starting standard chemotherapy treatment.

Difficult to treat and to fight bowel cancer

Prof William Steward, who is leading the study, said animal tests combining the two were “100 times better” than either on their own and that had been the “major justification for cracking on” with the trial. He said: “Once bowel cancer has spread it is very difficult to treat, partly because the side effects of chemotherapy can limit how long patients can have treatment.

“The prospect that curcumin might increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to fight bowel cancer and chemotherapy is exciting because it could mean giving lower doses, so patients have fewer side effects and can keep having treatment for longer. “This research is at a very early stage, but investigating the potential of plant chemicals to treat cancer is an intriguing area that we hope could provide clues to developing new drugs in the future.”
Joanna Reynolds, from Cancer Research UK, said: “By doing a clinical trial like this, we will find out more about the potential benefits of taking large amounts of curcumin, as well as any possible side effects this could have for fight bowel cancer.” Source: Rajomedia & BBC
